Everyone Plays is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing highly accessible, non-competitive sport and movement opportunities to children in Fernie.
This organization has come from a lot of thought about what's missing in kids sports in North America in general at the moment: play, variety, experimentation, and an emphasis on sportsmanship and inclusivity. There is no shortage of fantastic sports opportunities and sport leaders in our town - how lucky we are. However, as is the case all over North America, I worry that these opportunities are becoming progressively more expensive, more time-intensive, and more competitive; as such, they are becoming more and more exclusive.
As a movement professional, I understand how incredibly important positive childhood movement experiences are. Establishing a healthy relationship with movement from the get-go is one of the biggest predictors of physical literacy and agency over one's body in later life. These positive experiences should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it, and those who are attracted to competition.
My intention with Everyone Plays is to try to remove as many of these barriers as possible, to provide options for kids that are non-competitive, inexpensive, and that emphasize play, connection, and healthy movement.
We are currently running a pilot group with 5 and 6 year olds. We hope to run more groups in the Fall and to expand the age range up to 8 years old. Subscribe to Mountain Life's newsletter, and follow Everyone Plays Fernie on facebook for updates.
